Sports medicine is defined neither as a surgical nor as a medical specialty.
It is not merely the treatment and care of competitive athletes. Instead,
sports medicine is defined by the attitude of the patient and the clinician:
healthy people wanting to return to healthy physical activity.

We at Southeastern Orthopedics submit that the best way to define
sports medicine is as the care of patients who have sustained some
sort of injury or condition that limits their desired activities.
A sports medicine physician then is one who is committed to work with
the patient to help him or her return to desired activities.
We believe that the term "sports medicine" applies just
as easily to the older patient who encounters difficulty in recreational
activities and healthy lifestyle pursuits as to the elite athlete
desiring return to competitive play. The lifelong pursuit of activity
and function demands a thorough effort at non-operative management. The
majority of injuries and conditions can be resolved without surgery
and therefore physical therapy and rehabilitation are essential to
the specialty of sports medicine. We
also specialize in joint replacement surgery of shoulder, knee and
hips.
When surgery is needed, it is best done with minimally invasive procedures
such as arthroscopic surgery, thereby maximizing the quick return
to function. Thus, as sports medicine physicians, we believe in an
integrated, comprehensive approach to returning the patient to full
activity.
